Everything you need to know about DHA
Dihydoxyacetone, or DHA, is a colourless sugar that makes the magic happen in the self-tanning process. DHA reacts with the skin proteins, including amino acids, in the outermost layer of the skin. The reaction develops brown skin colouring that looks very similar to a natural tan.
DHA has been used commercially since the 1960’s, and technological advances over the years have vastly inmproved the results given by sunless lotions. As the refining process evolves, companies continue to produce higher quality, more predictable sunless products that provide natural looking tans.
Hints for Spray Tanning Application
- use barrier cream on feet, ankles, knees, elbows, wrists and hands to ensure a flawless finish!
- To prevent those nasty stains on the soles of the feet try using sticky feet – available in the salon essentials section.
- remind all clients not to apply any deoderant or body moisturiser as before tanning they create a barrier and prevent tan from developing properly.
Increasing your tanning salon business requires retaining old customers while attracting new ones, and setting your establishment apart from the rest. Tanning salons have popped up in most regions and to compete with other businesses you must offer a unique factor or benefit for your customers. So not only do you want to reach out to new patrons, you also need to keep your current client base happy.
Clean your equipment and store regularly. Have the tanning beds inspected by professionals to ensure they work properly. A cluttered waiting area or unclean tanning beds may decrease your clientele, and word of mouth may keep new customers from entering your establishment.
Offer your customers a little something more than your competitors. Set out a beverage station with free coffee and soda. Complimentary treats such as miniature cupcakes or cookies sweeten the waiting time of your patrons.
Increase your inventory of lotions or creams for customers. An expansive inventory gives patrons a variety of skin conditioners to choose from, allowing them to pick items for their particular skin type.
Add more services such as manicures or pedicures to the tanning salon. Customers pressed for time may opt to have their tanning, manicures and pedicures done at the same place than to make two separate stops.
Educate your employees to offer suggestions when selling tanning products. A well-informed employee provides customers with information on how to gradually tan the skin without burning, or how to keep their skin from drying out from the tanning beds.
Market your tanning salon using social media. Build a business page and connect with other businesses or friends and family that can promote your salon with good reviews. Place hours, your address and directions on your business page.
Luxury service providers like salons and spas are often the first to feel a tightening economy. Whether your business is new or well-established, maintaining and growing a salon means being part of current trends and increasing brand recognition within the community. When you insert your salon into the lives of your customers via social networking or charitable events, you increase customer loyalty and boost your business.
Reward loyalty. Keep your current customers coming back with monthly specials and discounts if they refer friends. Provide extra rewards for customers who refer numerous friends, getting them excited to help grow your business.
Use social networks to your benefit. Websites like Facebook and Twitter offer you a way to connect to your customers daily and keep your business and services in the forefront of their minds.

Participate in local fundraisers to get your brand noticed. Focus on charities that relate to women to show your support to customers. “Locks of Love” (an organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged sick children) or a breast-cancer awareness event gives your salon a chance to do something positive and get noticed.
Reevaluate the salon’s style and decor. You’ll attract more customers with a clean, updated-looking salon that focuses on a pampering spa-like experience for clients.
Provide special packages to meet customer needs or inspire them to reevaluate their needs and desires. Promote bachelorette party makeovers, “girls’ night out” manicures or back-to-college makeover packages.
Stay up-to-date with new products and services. Your staff should continue to pursue education and training on the newest techniques and styles clients are looking for.
Start a beauty blog or contribute to a community newspaper. Ask stylists to take turns writing a weekly blog posting on hair-color trends and new beauty products. Pitch a weekly beauty column to the local newspaper to increase your brand identity and promote your salon.
Network with local news and radio personalities. When you get to know newscasters or radio hosts, they may come to you to discuss new beauty trends, giving you opportunities to promote your business to a wider audience.
